Meanwhile, it is the regular application of such simple rules that can really reduce energy consumption without any cost or sacrifice of comfort.

Another source of unnecessary energy waste is appliances that remain in standby mode. Appliances such as televisions, set-top boxes, games consoles or chargers often consume energy even when they are not actively in use. This kind of “hidden” power consumption, although inconspicuous at first glance. It can generate annual costs of up to several tens or, in extreme cases, even several hundred zlotys. The solution is to completely disconnect unused appliances from sockets or to use power strips with a switch, which make it possible to simultaneously cut off power to several appliances. This is a simple change that does not require investment, but brings tangible financial benefits.

Replacement of equipment and good habits in daily use

It’s worth taking a close look at the appliances that work every day in the kitchen, bathroom or laundry room. Often these, although reliable for years, are the main source of excessive energy consumption. Old household appliances, especially those from a decade ago, can consume up to two or three times more electricity than their modern counterparts. For example, a fridge from 10 years ago can consume 400-500 kWh per year, while a new C-rated model (on the new, tighter scale) will consume only 150-200 kWh. The difference translates into several hundred zloty a year – and that’s just for one appliance.

From an economic point of view, gradually replacing the most energy-intensive appliances is a sensible investment. It makes sense to start with those that run the longest 24 hours a day – after all, the fridge runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This is closely followed by the washing machine and dishwasher, especially if they are used several times a week. Modern models of these appliances additionally offer “eco” programmes, which can significantly reduce electricity and water consumption. Even by 30% compared to standard settings.

Energy efficiency is not just down to technology – conscious habits are just as important. Running the dishwasher and washing machine only when they are fully loaded. Avoiding drying clothes in an electric dryer and planning household chores with energy efficiency in mind. These are actions that may seem small, but in the long run bring real savings. Often, choosing a programme of 30°C instead of 60°C significantly reduces the amount of energy required to heat the water. This corresponds to the annual energy consumption of an average family. At current electricity prices, this means savings of up to PLN 3.5-4 000 per year.

If there is an additional energy consumer in the household – such as an electric car or an air conditioner – photovoltaics can further ease the burden on the budget. It is estimated that the annual savings from charging the car with energy from its own panels can exceed PLN 2,800. Air conditioning powered by electricity from the sun means another several hundred PLN less on the energy invoice. What is more, the energy produced on site is clean, renewable and free from the influence of fluctuating raw material prices or geopolitical tensions. It is an investment in independence – and in peace of mind.

Of course, installing a PV system involves initial costs. Depending on the size of the system and the technology, the investment can range from a dozen to several tens of thousands of zloty. However, the good news is that support programmes are available. Such as ‘My Current’ or the thermo-modernisation allowance, which significantly reduce the entry cost. Under favourable conditions, the return on investment comes after just 6-10 years. The panels themselves run smoothly for another 15-20 years, providing almost free electricity every day.

Photovoltaics not only reduce bills, but also give you control over your home’s energy future. More and more people are combining solar panels with a heat pump and electric heating to create a modern, almost self-sufficient household. As a result, the home gains resilience to energy price rises, becomes independent of external suppliers and ceases to be a source of emissions.

Today, modern technology makes it possible not only to make everyday life more comfortable, but also to effectively reduce energy consumption. In some cases – especially with the use of photovoltaics – even more. If your electricity bills have so far been around £3,000 a year, you could save up to £1,000 or more after making changes. That’s money you can put towards other needs – from home improvements to holidays and other investments.

It is worth remembering that not all savings occur immediately. Some investments, such as photovoltaic panels, take time to pay off. However, once they start “earning” for themselves, they bring stable and predictable benefits for several or even several decades. In contrast, changes in daily habits, such as turning off lights, switching off standby appliances or taking advantage of cheaper tariffs. Such measures have an effect from the first month. The more such measures you implement, the greater the total savings will be.
